INCOMING STUDENTS

 

We are very pleased that you are interested in spending your semester(s) abroad at the Department of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NAME) at Yildiz Technical University (YTU) in Istanbul, Turkey.

 

It is noteworthy that the courses offered at the department in BSc, MSc & PhD levels are taught in English or Turkish depending on classes selected by the students.

 

For example, Research Project, Yacht Design Project, Ship Design Project, Ship Auxiliary Design Project, Ship Main Engine Design Project and finally Graduation Thesis are available in English. Furthermore, some core courses such as Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, etc are taught in English.

 

As a part of the Bologna Process and in the European Higher Education Area YTU uses ECTS credit system since 2013.  Detailed information on the overall courses taught at the department can be inquired in the YTU Bologna Information System. YTU has an active EU Office to coordinate all coming and/or leaving staff, student and personal exchange under ERASMUS Exchange Program.

 

In the Erasmus+ program, it is possible to study at YTU for one or two semesters. The only requirement is that your home university must have a cooperation agreement with our department. Therefore, if there is not any inter-institutional agreement between your department and our department of NAME and if you are interested in to come and study at the department you only need to apply to your departmental coordinator or our departmental coordinator via gimint@yildiz.edu.tr to make offers between the institutions.

BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE DEPARTMENT OF NAME, YTU & THE CITY OF ISTANBUL

 

 

Department of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering was founded in 1967 as the Marine Engineering division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Starting from 1982 the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was formed to give Naval Architect and Marine Engineers. The department was linked to the Naval Architecture and Maritime Faculty in 2009. The department educates qualified engineers for the rapidly evolving maritime industry and on this way accomplishes the needed innovative work. Feeling that the time requires quality and accreditation in education and training in order to compete in world scale the department was accredited in 2011 by Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) authorized by ENAEE to award EUR-ACE Label. The academic structure of the department has been configured with 21 professors specialized on wide range of areas of expertise and 25 research assistants with MSc & PhD degrees. The numbers of students at the department are 800 in BSc, 80 in MSc and 30 in PhD levels. The number of BSc graduates of the department reached 2000.

 

 

Yildiz Technical University is one of the ten government universities situated in İstanbul besides being the 3rd oldest university of Turkey with its history dating back to 1911.It is regarded as one of the best universities in the country as well.
